Polyurethane expert develops healthy and quiet interior space for vehicles
From August 15–17, Covestro, the inventor of polyurethane, is making its debut at the 2019 China International Automotive Interiors and Exteriors Exhibition. By showcasing a series of innovative polyurethane materials and customized solutions applied in the automotive industry, Covestro aims to create a healthier and quieter interior environment for vehicles, and further drive the sustainable development of automotive materials.

Due to national standards of in-vehicle air quality becoming more stringent, improving the interior environment of vehicles has become an R&D focus for vehicle manufacturers and parts enterprises. Simultaneously, lightweight automobile design has become a key focus for the global automotive industry. These trends are triggering market demand for sustainable and innovative automotive materials.

“Vehicles are the key connecting our homes and offices. Not only do drivers and passengers need a safe and healthy in-vehicle environment when travelling with their families, but they also require noise-free surroundings when travelling alone,” said Rachel Zheng, Global Head of Auto Solution, Business Unit Polyurethanes at Covestro. “With the innovative polyurethane materials developed by Covestro, consumers can now benefit from better in-vehicle journeys.”

Safe, comfortable and quiet in-vehicle environment
As an important material for vehicle interiors, polyurethane performs well in reducing Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and absorbing noise. During the exhibition, Covestro have showcased several innovative polyurethane vehicle interior and exterior applications, aiming to create a healthier and quieter interior environment for drivers and passengers.

Vehicle odors and VOC emissions will affect the health of passengers and drivers. Since the sources of in-vehicle odors and VOCs are very complex, reducing emissions has become one of the major challenges facing automobile manufacturers.

Covestro’s polyurethane solutions for instrument panels and headliners have been designed to improve the quality of in-vehicle air. Instrument panels, made from semi-rigid polyurethane filling skin foam Bayfill®, are characterized by low emission of VOCs, as well as excellent flowability and fast demoulding properties, which can significantly enhance production efficiency. The headliner, manufactured from Covestro’s Baynat® rigid foam, has been designed to absorb in-vehicle noise and demonstrates lower emission of VOCs, while also having the advantages of high bearing capacity and fracture resistance.

Additionally, with increasing demand for soundproofing in cars, Covestro has introduced two innovative NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) solutions, which provide quieter and more comfortable in-vehicle experiences for drivers and passengers. Covestro’s polyurethane structure foam, for example, is able to reduce in-vehicle noise and vibration from structural interspaces through the injection of Bayfit® SA materials into structural vehicle cavities. Covestro also exhibited a newly designed engine cover that focuses on absorbing engine noise and improving productivity while ensuring a high-quality external appearance.
