Focus on facts: Using facts to gain perspective and find solutions
The flood of data and opinions, and the complexity of issues and problems we face as our world undergoes rapid, comprehensive digital change, are causing uncertainty for many people. Moreover, social media tend to reproduce the same opinions over and over. The fatal consequence of this is that selective, one-sided information can narrow our worldviews. This promotes a tendency to look for seemingly simple solutions and populistic slogans. The consequence: society is becoming ever more polarized, and consensus-based dialog is becoming more and more rare.

A fact-based approach fosters better dialog
Facts are having a tough time in our era of fake news. False assertions, half-truths, and conspiracy theories hamper solution-oriented dialog. That, however, is exactly what we need: respect for the facts, bias-free thinking, objective dialog and a commitment to collaboration. Verifiable facts are the only way to reach the right conclusions. After all, without logical conclusions and an empirical approach, there is no science – the basis for urgently needed innovations.
Scientists, and many companies like Covestro, take just such an approach. As influential sociopolitical players, they are working against social disorientation and a rejection of facts. They are deploying their sociopolitical responsibilities and taking a stand: speculations, rumors, and false assumptions are not the way to move forward.
“We must all work to rebuild a culture of trust and clearly state who we trust most: scientists, journalists, bloggers, associations, think tanks, start-ups, companies, and many others. Then, we must demonstrate that only a fact-based worldview, in conjunction with critical optimism, can help us move forward.”
The chemical industry focuses on innovation
The chemical and plastics industry has always been a driver of innovation, and is shaping the transformation to a better future. It is contributing to this future with constructive solutions based on scientific discoveries. This shows that a focus on facts and cooperations will deliver the innovations we need to meet the challenges of our time.
As a science-based, open company, Covestro wants to foster a commitment to constructive, rational dialog. Since it was founded in 2015, Covestro has been showing how a fact-based and solution-oriented approach can lead to innovative products and positive changes. After all, the materials manufacturer is making the world more livable with high-quality plastics, thereby supporting a more sustainable future founded in particular on climate neutrality and a circular economy.
However, in the future Covestro aims to join with other like-minded companies to raise our voice more often in sociopolitical discussions. Because of this, Covestro is promoting fact-based discussions on every level, for instance in associations, partnerships, and cooperations. Covestro is demonstrating that positive change is achievable, and pays off for us all. Hopefully, in this way we can regain trust.
