Shaping the color community from Filago

Covestro has been in Italy since 1971. A sound sales, production and R&D network has been set up in Italy, along with a Color and Design Center (CDC) that fulfills all of Europe’s demand for high-performance materials and innovative solutions to meet customers’ needs. Through high-quality products and commitment Covestro wants “to make the world a brighter place”.

The Italian headquarters and production site is based near Bergamo in the north of Italy. Covestro is focused on polycarbonate compounding and the development of new colors for the EMLA Region. At the CDC, the company develops and provides solutions that best meet its customers’ needs.

The site’s highly diverse set-up and equipment support customers in everything from the development of their ideas to the complex chain of production scale-ups ranging from small samples of 25kg to big batch sizes of 20 metric tons.

Covestro operates through a skilled salesforce in the local market, with the team trading products for all seven Covestro business units: Performance Materials, Tailored Urethane Components, Engineering Plastics, Coatings & Adhesives, Specialty Films, Elastomers, and Thermoplastic Polyurethanes.

Incubating sustainable design trends

Among the many excellent activities linked to the Filago site, the Color and Design Center stands out. Established in 2002 it is part of a global network with other Covestro Color Centers around the world. The CDC at Filago is a place for important developments and an incubator of new design trends involving colored polymers.

In 2022, the Filago site was certified to the ISCC PLUS standard, an internationally recognized system for biomass and bioenergy sustainability certification. The company can now supply its customers with high-performance plastic polycarbonates from renewably attributed raw materials. They are characterized by quality and properties that are as good as their fossil-based counterparts.

  • 2018

Launch of the first industrial line dedicated to products with a high mineral content at Covestro and Inauguration of the new Covestro Italia headquarters

The installation of this line brought to the plant a technology that had already been industrialized but never applied to the polycarbonates business. That Headquarters placed this bet on the Filago plant was a great sign of trust. That same year, the construction of the new headquarters building was also completed having been designed to respect all Covestro’s values.

  • 2015

    Establishment of Covestro

On 1 September 2015, the high-tech polymers company MaterialScience officially separated from Bayer, became Covestro and was listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. Covestro has committed to 'making the world a brighter place' and to completely new values: curious, courageous, and colorful.

  • 2006-2011

Increased capacity for small batches, samples, and color processing – redesign of Color and Design Center

  • ISO 14001 environmental certification as the first company in Italy

It is thanks to the combination of spontaneous and proactive care for the environment and innovation, that the plant was the first in Italy to obtain ISO 14001 environmental certification in 1996. At first, it only related to the plastics production plant (KU) then owned by Bayer, but later was extended to all plants in the chemical park.

  • 1971

Start of compounding activity in Filago - KU Department

The plant in Filago was established in 1971 as Italy was considered a very interesting and promising market for plastics in the late 1960s. The starting point was the single-screw extruder technology of the first polycarbonate production lines. It was the start of a great adventure that has now lasted more than 50 years.

50 years of excellence in plastics production

The plant in Filago is now 50 years old. This long history of research, passion and excellence is today the solid ground on which Covestro every day builds the avant-garde in the world of high-tech plastics production, guided by two key words: sustainability and circularity, the keys of the future.
